Troubleshoot DZC Files
Typical DZC Opening Challenges
Microsoft PhotoSynth Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open DZC Files" when trying to open your DZC. Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft PhotoSynth isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft PhotoSynth installed, and you know of another program to open your DZC file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Microsoft PhotoSynth is Installed
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft PhotoSynth installed that's incompatible with your Photosynth Deep Zoom Collection type. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft PhotoSynth if you don't have the right version. Your Photosynth Deep Zoom Collection file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft PhotoSynth than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the DZC file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the DZC file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft PhotoSynth installed.
Other DZC File Opening Causes
Even with the correct version of Microsoft PhotoSynth installed, you can still experience difficulties opening DZCs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening DZCs. Additional factors include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for DZC are wrong
- The DZC file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Defective install of a DZC program, such as Microsoft PhotoSynth
- DZC file corruption
- Your DZC is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your DZC file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Photosynth Deep Zoom Collection file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
