Troubleshooting Problems Opening EBF Files
Issues Opening EBF Files
Missing Microsoft Windows CE Embedded
When you double-click your EBF file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Windows CE Embedded isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your EBF file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Windows CE Embedded installed, and you know of another program to open your EBF file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Windows CE Embedded is Out-of-Date
In other instances, your Pocket PC WindowsCE Form file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows CE Embedded. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Windows CE Embedded from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Pocket PC WindowsCE Form file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows CE Embedded than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of EBF file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of EBF file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Windows CE Embedded version installed.
Other EBF File Opening Causes
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Windows CE Embedded installed, you can still experience difficulties opening EBFs. Other EBF opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for EBF
- Accidental deletion of the description of the EBF file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a EBF program, such as Microsoft Windows CE Embedded
- EBF file corruption
- Past or present virus infection has affected your EBF
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your EBF file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Pocket PC WindowsCE Form file
