Understanding ERR Issues

Troubles Opening ERR Files

Microsoft Notepad Isn't There

You attempt to load your ERR file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The ERR File Extension". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Notepad isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: When another ERR application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.

Microsoft Notepad Requires Update

Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Notepad installed that's incompatible with your Error Log File type. Download the latest Microsoft Notepad version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Error Log File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Notepad than what's installed.

Tip: Right-clicking on your ERR, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening ERR files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Notepad installed.

• Deletion of the ERR file description from the Registry by mistake
• Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the ERR format
• Something has caused file corruption of your ERR
• Your ERR is infected with malware
• ERR-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
