ESL File Complications
Common ESL Opening Problems
Microsoft Visual FoxPro Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ESL Files" when trying to open your ESL. If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed for %%os%%. The typical path of opening your ESL with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, and you know of another program to open your ESL file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro
Your Visual FoxPro Distributable Support Library file is incompatible with Microsoft Visual FoxPro because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual FoxPro (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Visual FoxPro Distributable Support Library file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ESL file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Visual FoxPro version on your computer can cause problems opening ESL files.
More Causes of Problems Opening ESLs
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ESLs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening ESLs. These issues include:
- Invalid ESL file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the ESL file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a ESL program, such as Microsoft Visual FoxPro
- File corruption affecting your ESL file
- ESL file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for ESL-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Visual FoxPro Distributable Support Library file
