Troubleshooting Problems Opening ESN Files

Common Problems Opening ESN Files

Unreal Tournament Isn't There

Double-clicking your ESN file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open ESN File". Usually, this is because you do not have Unreal Tournament for %%os%% installed. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the ESN file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.

Tip: Another ESN-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Wrong Version of Unreal Tournament is Installed

It is possible that your version of Unreal Tournament isn't able to open your Unreal Engine Language Localization file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Unreal Tournament version from the Epic Games website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Most of the time your Unreal Engine Language Localization file was created by a newer Unreal Tournament than what you have installed.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ESN file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening ESN files are due to having the incorrect version of Unreal Tournament installed on your computer.

Other ESN File Issues

You can still experience errors opening ESN files even with the latest version of Unreal Tournament installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading ESN files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:

  • Invalid ESN file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the ESN file inside the Windows Registry
  • Defective install of a ESN program, such as Unreal Tournament
  • The ESN itself is corrupted
  • The ESN is infected with a virus
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your ESN file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Unreal Engine Language Localization file
