Troubleshooting Problems Opening EST Files

Frequent EST Opening Issues

Microsoft MapPoint Isn't There

When trying to open your EST file, you get the error "Can't Open EST File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft MapPoint is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your EST because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft MapPoint installed, and you know of another program to open your EST file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Incorrect Microsoft MapPoint Version

Your Streets & Trips Map File file is incompatible with Microsoft MapPoint because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of Microsoft MapPoint from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Your Streets & Trips Map File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft MapPoint than what's currently installed your computer.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the EST file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Regardless, most of the EST file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft MapPoint installed.

Other EST File Issues

Even with the correct version of Microsoft MapPoint installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ESTs. Other EST opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):

  • Windows Registry EST file paths that are incorrect
  • Accidental deletion of the description of the EST file in the Windows registry
  • Microsoft MapPoint or another EST application experienced a flawed installation
  • EST file corruption
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your EST
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your EST file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your Streets & Trips Map File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
