ETP File Complications
Troubles Opening ETP Files
Microsoft Visual Studio is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ETP Files" when trying to open your ETP. Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Visual Studio isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your ETP because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another ETP application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Microsoft Visual Studio is Out-of-Date
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Visual Studio Enterprise Template Project file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio. Your Visual Studio Enterprise Template Project file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the ETP file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Regardless, most of the ETP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Other Causes of ETP File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening ETP files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening ETPs. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid ETP file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the ETP file description from the Registry by mistake
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual Studio that did not fully complete
- Your ETP can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Your ETP is infected with malware
- Device drivers for ETP-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Visual Studio Enterprise Template Project file
