Troubleshoot EUF Files
Common EUF Opening Problems
Microsoft Private Character Editor Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open EUF Files" when trying to open your EUF. Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Private Character Editor for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your EUF with Microsoft Private Character Editor, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your EUF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Wrong Version of Microsoft Private Character Editor is Installed
Your Private Character Editor Font File file is incompatible with Microsoft Private Character Editor because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Private Character Editor from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Private Character Editor Font File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Private Character Editor than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the EUF file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening EUF files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening EUFs
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Private Character Editor version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening EUF files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening EUFs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- EUF file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry EUF description
- Defective install of a EUF program, such as Microsoft Private Character Editor
- Your EUF file is corrupted (issues with your Private Character Editor Font File file itself)
- Your EUF is infected with malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your EUF file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Private Character Editor Font File file successfully
