Troubleshoot EVT Files

Typical EVT Opening Challenges

Missing Microsoft Event Viewer

Double-clicking your EVT file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open EVT File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Event Viewer isn't installed on your PC. The typical path of opening your EVT with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your EVT file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Outdated Microsoft Event Viewer

Your Microsoft Windows 2000 And XP Event Log file is incompatible with Microsoft Event Viewer because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Event Viewer (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Windows 2000 And XP Event Log file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Event Viewer than what's installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of EVT file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the EVT file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Event Viewer installed.

Associated Difficulties Loading EVT Files

You can still experience errors opening EVT files even with the latest version of Microsoft Event Viewer installed on your PC. • EVT file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Corruption of the EVT file description inside the Registry
  • Defective install of a EVT program, such as Microsoft Event Viewer
