FDB File Complications

Issues Opening FDB Files

Portfolio Disappeared

You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open FDB Files" when trying to open your FDB. When this happens, it is commonly due to Portfolio missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your FDB file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: Another FDB-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Wrong Version of Portfolio is Installed

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Portfolio Catalog file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Extensis website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Portfolio. Most of the time your Portfolio Catalog file was created by a newer Portfolio than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FDB file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening FDB files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

More Causes of Problems Opening FDBs

Even with the correct version of Portfolio installed, you can still experience difficulties opening FDBs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening FDB files. Other contributing causes:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for FDB
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the FDB file inside the Windows Registry
  • Portfolio or another FDB application experienced a flawed installation
  • Something has caused file corruption of your FDB
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your FDB
  • Device drivers for FDB-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Portfolio Catalog files
