Understanding FEP Issues
Frequent FEP Opening Issues
Missing Web Embedding Fonts Tool (WEFT)
Double-clicking your FEP file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open FEP File". Customarily, this means that Web Embedding Fonts Tool (WEFT) is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your FEP because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another FEP-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Web Embedding Fonts Tool (WEFT) Version
Your WEFT Embedding Project file is incompatible with Web Embedding Fonts Tool (WEFT) because you might have the wrong version installed. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Web Embedding Fonts Tool (WEFT). This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: Right-clicking on your FEP, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening FEP files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening FEPs
Although you might already have Web Embedding Fonts Tool (WEFT) or another FEP-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening WEFT Embedding Project files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading FEP files, other external issues might be to blame. Additional factors include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for FEP
- Accidental deletion of the description of the FEP file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Web Embedding Fonts Tool (WEFT) that did not fully complete
- FEP file corruption
- Past or present virus infection has affected your FEP
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your FEP file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your WEFT Embedding Project file successfully
