Troubleshooting Problems Opening FID Files

Common Problems Opening FID Files

Microsoft Windows Not Present

You attempt to load your FID file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The FID File Extension". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Windows for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your FID because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: If you know of another program that can open your FID file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.

Incorrect Microsoft Windows Version

In other instances, your Windows Indexing Service File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Windows. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows if you don't have the right version. This issue mainly occurs when your Windows Indexing Service File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than you have on your PC.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FID file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Regardless, most of the FID file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Windows installed.

Other FID File Opening Causes

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Windows version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening FID files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening FIDs. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Invalid FID file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Mistaken removal of the Windows registry FID description
  • Partial installation of Microsoft Windows that did not fully complete
  • Something has caused file corruption of your FID
  • Your FID is infected with malware
  • Hardware related to FIDs has device driver corruption
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Windows Indexing Service File files
