Understanding FL Issues
Troubles Opening FL Files
Freelancer Removed
You attempt to load your FL file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The FL File Extension". Customarily, this means that Freelancer is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: Another FL-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Outdated Freelancer
Your Freelancer Saved Game File file is incompatible with Freelancer because you might have the wrong version installed. Download the latest Freelancer version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Freelancer Saved Game File file was created by a different (newer) version of Freelancer than what's installed.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your FL file and clicking "Properties".
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening FL files are due to having the wrong version of Freelancer installed.
Additional FL Opening Issues
Assuming you have the right Freelancer version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening FL files. If you are continuing to have errors with loading FL files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:
- Windows Registry FL file paths that are incorrect
- Corruption of the FL file description inside the Registry
- Defective install of a FL program, such as Freelancer
- Your FL file is corrupted (issues with your Freelancer Saved Game File file itself)
- Your FL is infected with malware
- Hardware related to FLs has device driver corruption
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Freelancer Saved Game File file successfully
