FLL Troubleshooting

Issues Opening FLL Files

Microsoft Visual FoxPro Not Present

Double-clicking your FLL file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open FLL File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft Visual FoxPro isn't installed on your PC. The OS won't know what to do with your FLL file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your FLL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Microsoft Visual FoxPro Requires Update

In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a FoxPro Dynamic-Link Library file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Microsoft Visual FoxPro version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your FoxPro Dynamic-Link Library file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro than what's installed.

Tip: If you right-click on your FLL file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.

Primarily, problems experienced when opening FLL files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed on your computer.

Associated Difficulties Loading FLL Files

You can still experience errors opening FLL files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening FLLs. Additional factors include:

  • FLL file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • Deletion of the FLL file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the FLL format
  • Your FLL file is corrupted (issues with your FoxPro Dynamic-Link Library file itself)
  • Malware-tainted FLL file can't be opened
  • Device drivers for FLL-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Windows cannot load your FoxPro Dynamic-Link Library file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
