Troubleshoot FLOW Files
Troubles Opening FLOW Files
Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow Disappeared
When you double-click your FLOW file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens FLOW files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Outdated Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow installed that's incompatible with your Expression SketchFlow Data File type. Download the latest Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This issue mainly occurs when your Expression SketchFlow Data File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow than you have on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your FLOW, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Regardless, most of the FLOW file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening FLOWs
You can still experience errors opening FLOW files even with the latest version of Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading FLOW files, other external issues might be to blame. Problems unrelated to software:
- FLOW file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Unintentional removal of the description of the FLOW file inside the Windows Registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Expressions SketchFlow that did not fully complete
- FLOW file corruption
- Your FLOW is infected with malware
- FLOW-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Windows cannot load your Expression SketchFlow Data File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
