FLT Troubleshooting
Frequent FLT Opening Issues
ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop Isn't There
When you double-click your FLT file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your FLT because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your FLT file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Obsolete Version of ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop
It is possible that your version of ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop isn't able to open your OpenFlight Scene Description File file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. This issue mainly occurs when your OpenFlight Scene Description File file was created by a newer version of ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your FLT file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening FLT files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Associated Difficulties Loading FLT Files
Errors opening OpenFlight Scene Description File files can still occur even with the latest ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop software installed on your computer. Other FLT opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Invalid FLT file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the FLT file description inside the Registry
- Defective install of a FLT program, such as ESRI ArcGIS for Desktop
- Your FLT file is corrupted (issues with your OpenFlight Scene Description File file itself)
- FLT file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers for FLT-related hardware are out-of-date
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open OpenFlight Scene Description File files
