Troubleshoot FMD Files
Troubles Opening FMD Files
Missing MotionArtist
When you double-click your FMD file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because MotionArtist isn't installed on your PC. Your operating system cannot associate your FMD with MotionArtist, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your FMD file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Wrong Version of MotionArtist is Installed
In other instances, your MotionArtist Document File file version may not be supported by your version of MotionArtist. If you do not have the proper version MotionArtist (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your MotionArtist Document File file was probably created by a newer release of MotionArtist than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FMD file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right MotionArtist version on your computer can cause problems opening FMD files.
Additional FMD Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening FMD files even with the latest version of MotionArtist installed on your PC. If you are continuing to have errors with loading FMD files, other external issues might be to blame. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- File references in the Windows Registry for FMD are wrong
- Unintentional removal of the description of the FMD file inside the Windows Registry
- Invalid installation of a FMD-associated program (eg. MotionArtist)
- The FMD itself is corrupted
- Past or present virus infection has affected your FMD
- Drivers associated with FMD software need to be updated
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your MotionArtist Document File file successfully
