Understanding FMT Issues
Issues Opening FMT Files
Microsoft Visual FoxPro is Not Installed
If you attempt to load your FMT file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open FMT Files". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Visual FoxPro for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your FMT with Microsoft Visual FoxPro, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When another FMT application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Wrong Version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro is Installed
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro isn't able to open your FoxPro Format File file due to incompatibility. Download the latest Microsoft Visual FoxPro version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. Your FoxPro Format File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual FoxPro than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FMT file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Primarily, problems experienced when opening FMT files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed on your computer.
Additional FMT Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening FMT files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening FMTs. Additional factors include:
- FMT file type Registry entries are wrong
- Mistaken removal of the Windows registry FMT description
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual FoxPro that did not fully complete
- File corruption affecting your FMT file
- The FMT is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for FMT-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your FoxPro Format File file
