Troubleshooting Problems Opening FND Files

Issues Opening FND Files

Missing Microsoft Windows

When you double-click your FND file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Windows is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your FND because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: Another FND-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.

Microsoft Windows is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Windows won't support your Windows Saved Search File file. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Windows. This issue mainly occurs when your Windows Saved Search File file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than you have on your PC.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the FND file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows version on your computer can cause problems opening FND files.

Other Causes of FND File Opening Problems

Even with the correct version of Microsoft Windows installed, you can still experience difficulties opening FNDs. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening FNDs. Issues that aren't software-related:

  • File references in the Windows Registry for FND are wrong
  • The FND file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Defective install of a FND program, such as Microsoft Windows
  • FND file corruption
  • The FND is infected with a virus
  • Hardware related to FNDs has device driver corruption
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Windows Saved Search File format
