Understanding FON Issues
Typical FON Opening Challenges
Missing Microsoft Windows Font Viewer
Double-clicking your FON file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open FON File". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Windows Font Viewer for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your FON with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another FON application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Microsoft Windows Font Viewer Requires Update
Your Generic Font File file is incompatible with Microsoft Windows Font Viewer because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Windows Font Viewer from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Generic Font File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows Font Viewer than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your FON, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows Font Viewer version on your computer can cause problems opening FON files.
Associated Difficulties Loading FON Files
You can still experience errors opening FON files even with the latest version of Microsoft Windows Font Viewer installed on your PC. Other FON opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These issues include:
- Windows Registry FON file paths that are incorrect
- Deletion of the FON file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a FON-associated program (eg. Microsoft Windows Font Viewer)
- The FON itself is corrupted
- Your FON has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your FON file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Generic Font File file successfully
