Troubleshoot FRX Files
Frequent FRX Opening Issues
Microsoft Visual Basic Removed
You attempt to load your FRX file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The FRX File Extension". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Visual Basic is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the FRX file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another FRX application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Microsoft Visual Basic Requires Update
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual Basic isn't able to open your Visual Basic Binary Form File file due to incompatibility. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Visual Basic. The primary cause of this problem is that your Visual Basic Binary Form File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual Basic than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FRX file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of FRX file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Visual Basic version installed.
Other Causes of FRX File Opening Problems
Errors opening Visual Basic Binary Form File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Visual Basic software installed on your computer. Other FRX opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- FRX file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the FRX file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a FRX-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual Basic)
- Something has caused file corruption of your FRX
- Past or present virus infection has affected your FRX
- Hardware related to FRXs has device driver corruption
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Visual Basic Binary Form File files
