Sources of FS Problems
Troubles Opening FS Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared
When you double-click your FS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Visual Studio for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your FS file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual Studio installed, and you know of another program to open your FS file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Wrong Version of Microsoft Visual Studio is Installed
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual Studio isn't able to open your Visual F# Source File file due to incompatibility. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Most of the time your Visual F# Source File file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.
Tip: Investigate your FS file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Regardless, most of the FS file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Other FS File Opening Causes
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Visual Studio will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening FSs. Additional factors include:
- Invalid FS file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the FS file description inside the Registry
- Defective install of a FS program, such as Microsoft Visual Studio
- Something has caused file corruption of your FS
- FS file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your FS file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Visual F# Source File file successfully
