FSI Troubleshooting

Troubles Opening FSI Files

Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared

When you double-click your FSI file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your FSI with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.

Tip: If you have another software that you know opens FSI files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.

Microsoft Visual Studio is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Visual Studio won't support your Visual F# Signature File file. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. The primary cause of this problem is that your Visual F# Signature File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's installed.

Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the FSI file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.

Conclusion: The majority of FSI file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Visual Studio version installed.

Other FSI File Opening Causes

Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening FSI files. If you're still experiencing problems opening FSI files, there could be other computer problems. Problems unrelated to software:

  • FSI file references in the Windows Registry are broken
  • The FSI file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Corrupt install of Microsoft Visual Studio or other FSI-related program
  • Your FSI can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted FSI file can't be opened
  • Device drivers for FSI-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Too many applications are open on your PC to load your Visual F# Signature File file successfully
