Troubleshoot FTS Files
Typical FTS Opening Challenges
Microsoft Windows Help Not Present
When you double-click your FTS file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft Windows Help is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the FTS file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your FTS file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Microsoft Windows Help is Out-of-Date
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Windows Help won't support your Full Text Search file. Download the latest Microsoft Windows Help version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Full Text Search file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Windows Help than what's installed.
Tip: If you right-click on your FTS file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening FTS files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional FTS Opening Issues
Although you might already have Microsoft Windows Help or another FTS-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Full Text Search files. Other FTS opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:
- FTS file type Registry entries are wrong
- The FTS file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the FTS format
- Your FTS file is corrupted (issues with your Full Text Search file itself)
- The FTS is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your FTS file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Full Text Search format
