Sources of FWP Problems
Troubles Opening FWP Files
Microsoft Expression Studio is Not Installed
When you double-click your FWP file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Expression Studio for %%os%% installed. Your operating system cannot associate your FWP with Microsoft Expression Studio, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your FWP file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Microsoft Expression Studio Requires Update
In other instances, your Microsoft Expression Web Package file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Expression Studio. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft Expression Studio. This issue mainly occurs when your Microsoft Expression Web Package file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Expression Studio than you have on your PC.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FWP file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Conclusion: The majority of FWP file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Expression Studio version installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading FWP Files
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Expression Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening FWP files. Other FWP opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Problems unrelated to software:
- FWP file type Registry entries are wrong
- Corruption of the FWP file description inside the Registry
- Microsoft Expression Studio or another FWP application experienced a flawed installation
- File corruption affecting your FWP file
- Your FWP has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers for FWP-related hardware are out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Expression Web Package format
