Troubleshooting Problems Opening FXD Files
Troubles Opening FXD Files
Microsoft Visual FoxPro Disappeared
When trying to open your FXD file, you get the error "Can't Open FXD File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual FoxPro missing in %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the FXD file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed, and you know of another program to open your FXD file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Microsoft Visual FoxPro Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a FoxPro FoxDoc Support Data file that is unsupported by your installed application version. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your FoxPro FoxDoc Support Data file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of FXD file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Regardless, most of the FXD file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed.
Other FXD File Issues
You can still experience errors opening FXD files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual FoxPro installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening FXD files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for FXD
- Deletion of the FXD file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a FXD-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual FoxPro)
- Your FXD file is corrupted (issues with your FoxPro FoxDoc Support Data file itself)
- The FXD is infected with a virus
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your FXD file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your FoxPro FoxDoc Support Data file successfully
