Understanding GAX Issues
Troubles Opening GAX Files
Microsoft Age of Empires Isn't There
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open GAX Files" when trying to open your GAX. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Age of Empires is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your GAX file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your GAX file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Microsoft Age of Empires is Out-of-Date
Your Age Of Empires II Saved Game file is incompatible with Microsoft Age of Empires because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Age of Empires installed, you'll need to install the correct version. Most of the time your Age Of Empires II Saved Game file was created by a newer Microsoft Age of Empires than what you have installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your GAX, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening GAX files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
