GBL Troubleshooting

Issues Opening GBL Files

CadSoft EAGLE is Not Installed

If you attempt to load your GBL file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open GBL Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have CadSoft EAGLE for %%os%% installed on your computer. The OS won't know what to do with your GBL file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your GBL, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

CadSoft EAGLE Requires Update

Sometimes your installed version of CadSoft EAGLE won't support your Gerber Bottom Layer Data File file. You will need to download a newer version of CadSoft EAGLE if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your Gerber Bottom Layer Data File file was created by a newer CadSoft EAGLE than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of GBL file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Summary: Not having the right CadSoft EAGLE version on your computer can cause problems opening GBL files.

Associated Difficulties Loading GBL Files

Assuming you have the right CadSoft EAGLE version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening GBL files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening GBLs. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Windows Registry GBL file paths that are incorrect
  • Deletion of the GBL file description from the Registry by mistake
  • Partial installation of CadSoft EAGLE that did not fully complete
  • Something has caused file corruption of your GBL
  • Past or present virus infection has affected your GBL
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your GBL file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your Gerber Bottom Layer Data File file
