Troubleshoot GRA Files
Frequent GRA Opening Issues
Microsoft Excel Removed
If you attempt to load your GRA file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open GRA Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Excel for %%os%% installed on your computer. Your operating system cannot associate your GRA with Microsoft Excel, so double-clicking the file won't work.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your GRA, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Microsoft Excel
In other instances, your Microsoft Graph File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft Excel. Download the latest Microsoft Excel version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Microsoft Graph File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Excel than what's installed.
Tip: Right-clicking on your GRA, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Conclusion: The majority of GRA file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Excel version installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening GRAs
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Excel will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening GRA files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- GRA file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Accidental deletion of the description of the GRA file in the Windows registry
- Corrupt install of Microsoft Excel or other GRA-related program
- Your GRA file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Graph File file itself)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your GRA
- Hardware associated with GRA has outdated drivers
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Microsoft Graph File file
