GSH Troubleshooting
Common GSH Opening Problems
Microsoft Visual Studio Removed
You attempt to load your GSH file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The GSH File Extension". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your GSH because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another GSH application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Microsoft Visual Studio Requires Update
Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Visual Studio won't support your Microsoft Visual Studio Data File file. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Visual Studio (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. Your Microsoft Visual Studio Data File file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft Visual Studio than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: Right-clicking on your GSH, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening GSH files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening GSHs
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you can still experience difficulties opening GSHs. Other GSH opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid GSH file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the GSH file inside the Windows Registry
- Defective install of a GSH program, such as Microsoft Visual Studio
- Your GSH file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Visual Studio Data File file itself)
- Your GSH has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with GSH has outdated drivers
- Insufficient system resources to successfully open Microsoft Visual Studio Data File files
