Sources of HDP Problems
Typical HDP Opening Challenges
Adobe Photoshop Not Present
If you attempt to load your HDP file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open HDP Files". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Adobe Photoshop for %%os%% installed on your computer. The typical path of opening your HDP with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens HDP files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Obsolete Version of Adobe Photoshop
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Adobe Photoshop installed that's incompatible with your HD Photo File type. Download the latest Adobe Photoshop version from the Adobe Systems Incorporated website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a HD Photo File file version that was created by a newer version of Adobe Photoshop than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the HDP file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Conclusion: The majority of HDP file opening issues are due to not having the correct Adobe Photoshop version installed.
Additional HDP Opening Issues
Errors opening HD Photo File files can still occur even with the latest Adobe Photoshop software installed on your computer. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening HDPs. These issues include:
- File references in the Windows Registry for HDP are wrong
- Deletion of the HDP file description from the Registry by mistake
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the HDP format
- Your HDP file is corrupted (issues with your HD Photo File file itself)
- The HDP is infected with a virus
- Device drivers for HDP-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your HD Photo File file
