Sources of HHK Problems
Common Problems Opening HHK Files
Microsoft HTML Help Workshop Disappeared
When you double-click your HHK file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". Customarily, this means that Microsoft HTML Help Workshop is not installed on %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your HHK because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another HHK-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft HTML Help Workshop Requires Update
In other instances, your HTML Help Index file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop. Download the latest Microsoft HTML Help Workshop version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a HTML Help Index file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your HHK file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening HHK files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop installed.
Other HHK File Opening Causes
You can still experience errors opening HHK files even with the latest version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening HHKs. Problems unrelated to software:
- HHK file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Corruption of the HHK file description inside the Registry
- Defective install of a HHK program, such as Microsoft HTML Help Workshop
- File corruption affecting your HHK file
- The HHK is infected with a virus
- Hardware associated with HHK has outdated drivers
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your HTML Help Index file successfully
