Understanding HHP Issues
Common HHP Opening Problems
Missing Microsoft HTML Help Workshop
If you attempt to load your HHP file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open HHP Files". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Microsoft HTML Help Workshop isn't installed on your PC. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your HHP, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Outdated Microsoft HTML Help Workshop
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop installed that's incompatible with your HTML Help Workshop Project type. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your HTML Help Workshop Project file was created by a newer version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your HHP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the HHP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading HHP Files
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft HTML Help Workshop will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening HHP files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- HHP file type Registry entries are wrong
- The HHP file description within the Windows Registry was removed
- Invalid installation of a HHP-associated program (eg. Microsoft HTML Help Workshop)
- Your HHP file is corrupted (issues with your HTML Help Workshop Project file itself)
- HHP file integrity has been compromised by malware
- HHP-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Too many applications are open on your PC to load your HTML Help Workshop Project file successfully
