Sources of HM Problems
Common Problems Opening HM Files
Microsoft Visual C++ is Not Installed
When trying to open your HM file, you get the error "Can't Open HM File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual C++ missing in %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your HM, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Obsolete Version of Microsoft Visual C++
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed that's incompatible with your Windows Help Context IDs type. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual C++ installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Windows Help Context IDs file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual C++ than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the HM file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening HM files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of HM File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Visual C++ will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening HM files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for HM are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the HM file in the Windows registry
- Partial installation of Microsoft Visual C++ that did not fully complete
- Your HM file is corrupted (issues with your Windows Help Context IDs file itself)
- Your HM has adversely impacted by malware
- Device drivers for HM-related hardware are out-of-date
- Windows cannot load your Windows Help Context IDs file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
