HME Troubleshooting
Typical HME Opening Challenges
Missing Microsoft ActiveSync
When trying to open your HME file, you get the error "Can't Open HME File Type". If so, it typically means that you don't have Microsoft ActiveSync installed for %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your HME because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your HME file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Wrong Version of Microsoft ActiveSync is Installed
Your Windows Mobile Theme File file is incompatible with Microsoft ActiveSync because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft ActiveSync installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Windows Mobile Theme File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft ActiveSync than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your HME file and clicking "Properties".
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft ActiveSync version on your computer can cause problems opening HME files.
Other HME File Issues
Errors opening Windows Mobile Theme File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft ActiveSync software installed on your computer. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening HME files. Additional factors include:
- Windows Registry HME file paths that are incorrect
- Accidental deletion of the description of the HME file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a HME-associated program (eg. Microsoft ActiveSync)
- The HME itself is corrupted
- Past or present virus infection has affected your HME
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your HME file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Windows Mobile Theme File format
