Understanding HOL Issues
Frequent HOL Opening Issues
Microsoft Outlook 2016 is Not Installed
Double-clicking your HOL file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open HOL File". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Outlook 2016 for %%os%% installed. You won't be able to double-click to open your HOL because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When another HOL application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Incorrect Microsoft Outlook 2016 Version
Your Outlook Holidays File file is incompatible with Microsoft Outlook 2016 because you might have the wrong version installed. If you do not have the proper version Microsoft Outlook 2016 (or any of the other programs listed above), you may need to try downloading a different version of it, or one of the other software applications listed above. The primary cause of this problem is that your Outlook Holidays File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Outlook 2016 than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of HOL file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Outlook 2016 version on your computer can cause problems opening HOL files.
Other HOL File Opening Causes
Errors opening Outlook Holidays File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft Outlook 2016 software installed on your computer. If you are still having problems opening HOL files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid HOL file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the HOL file description inside the Registry
- Defective install of a HOL program, such as Microsoft Outlook 2016
- Your HOL can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- Past or present virus infection has affected your HOL
- HOL-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Outlook Holidays File format
