Understanding HT Issues
Frequent HT Opening Issues
HyperTerminal Removed
When trying to open your HT file, you get the error "Can't Open HT File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to HyperTerminal missing in %%os%%. The typical path of opening your HT with a double-click won't work because %%os%% cannot make the program connection.
Tip: When another HT application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Wrong Version of HyperTerminal is Installed
Your HyperTerminal Session File file is incompatible with HyperTerminal because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of HyperTerminal installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This issue mainly occurs when your HyperTerminal Session File file was created by a newer version of HyperTerminal than you have on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your HT file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening HT files are due to having the wrong version of HyperTerminal installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening HTs
Even with the correct version of HyperTerminal installed, you can still experience difficulties opening HTs. If you are still having problems opening HT files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for HT
- Accidental deletion of the description of the HT file in the Windows registry
- Invalid installation of a HT-associated program (eg. HyperTerminal)
- Your HT file is corrupted (issues with your HyperTerminal Session File file itself)
- Your HT is infected with malware
- Hardware associated with HT has outdated drivers
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the HyperTerminal Session File file
