Troubleshoot HTR Files
Common HTR Opening Problems
Windows NT Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open HTR Files" when trying to open your HTR. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Windows NT for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the HTR file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Windows NT installed, and you know of another program to open your HTR file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of Windows NT
Your Microsoft Windows NT Password Services Script file is incompatible with Windows NT because you might have the wrong version installed. If you've got the wrong version of Windows NT installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Windows NT Password Services Script file version that was created by a newer version of Windows NT than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your HTR file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening HTR files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Additional HTR Opening Issues
You can still experience errors opening HTR files even with the latest version of Windows NT installed on your PC. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening HTR files. Problems unrelated to software:
- HTR file type Registry entries are wrong
- Deletion of the HTR file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a HTR program, such as Windows NT
- HTR file corruption
- HTR file integrity has been compromised by malware
- HTR-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Windows NT Password Services Script format
