Troubleshooting Problems Opening I Files
Troubles Opening I Files
Missing Microsoft Visual Studio
When you double-click your I file, you may see a dialog box from your operating system stating that it "Cannot Open This File Type". If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Visual Studio for %%os%% installed on your computer. You won't be able to double-click to open your I because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another I-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Microsoft Visual Studio is Out-of-Date
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Visual Studio isn't able to open your Visual Studio Intermediate File file due to incompatibility. If you've got the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you'll need to install the correct version. This problem is predominately due to having a Visual Studio Intermediate File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Right-clicking on your I, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening I files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other Causes of I File Opening Problems
Although you might already have Microsoft Visual Studio or another I-associated software installed on your computer, you can still encounter problems opening Visual Studio Intermediate File files. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening I files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid I file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the I file description inside the Registry
- Defective install of a I program, such as Microsoft Visual Studio
- File corruption affecting your I file
- The I is infected with a virus
- I-related hardware has device drivers that obsolete
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Visual Studio Intermediate File format
