Troubleshoot ICL Files

Common ICL Opening Problems

Microsoft Windows is Not Installed

If you attempt to load your ICL file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open ICL Files". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Windows for %%os%% installed. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.

Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Windows installed, and you know of another program to open your ICL file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".

Wrong Version of Microsoft Windows is Installed

Your Windows Icon Library File file is incompatible with Microsoft Windows because you might have the wrong version installed. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows if you don't have the right version. This problem is predominately due to having a Windows Icon Library File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Windows than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Find clues on the correct software version by right-clicking your ICL file and clicking "Properties".

Conclusion: The majority of ICL file opening issues are due to not having the correct Microsoft Windows version installed.

Other ICL File Issues

You can still experience errors opening ICL files even with the latest version of Microsoft Windows installed on your PC. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening ICLs. Problems unrelated to software:

  • Corrupt Windows Registry file path references for ICL
  • The ICL file description within the Windows Registry was removed
  • Microsoft Windows or another ICL application experienced a flawed installation
  • The ICL itself is corrupted
  • Malware-tainted ICL file can't be opened
  • Device drivers for ICL-related hardware are out-of-date
  • Insufficient system resources to successfully open Windows Icon Library File files
