ICW Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening ICW Files
Internet Explorer Not Present
You attempt to load your ICW file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The ICW File Extension". Customarily, this means that Internet Explorer is not installed on %%os%%. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the ICW file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: When another ICW application is installed, you can choose to open it by selecting "Show Apps" and using that program.
Incorrect Internet Explorer Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Microsoft Internet Explorer Internet Connection Wizard Data file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Internet Explorer version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Internet Explorer Internet Connection Wizard Data file version that was created by a newer version of Internet Explorer than what you have installed on your PC.
Tip: Investigate your ICW file by right-clicking and selecting "Properties" to find clues on what version you need.
Primarily, problems experienced when opening ICW files are due to having the incorrect version of Internet Explorer installed on your computer.
Other Causes of ICW File Opening Problems
Even with the correct version of Internet Explorer installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ICWs. If you are still having problems opening ICW files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Other contributing causes:
- File references in the Windows Registry for ICW are wrong
- Accidental deletion of the description of the ICW file in the Windows registry
- Defective install of a ICW program, such as Internet Explorer
- Something has caused file corruption of your ICW
- Past or present virus infection has affected your ICW
- Drivers associated with ICW software need to be updated
- Windows has inadequate resources to open your Microsoft Internet Explorer Internet Connection Wizard Data file
