ILK Troubleshooting
Common Problems Opening ILK Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open ILK Files" when trying to open your ILK. When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your ILK file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you have another software that you know opens ILK files, you can select it by hitting the "Show Apps" button.
Microsoft Visual Studio is Out-of-Date
Your Microsoft Visual Studio Linker Input File file is incompatible with Microsoft Visual Studio because you might have the wrong version installed. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. Most of the time your Microsoft Visual Studio Linker Input File file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of ILK file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening ILK files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
More Causes of Problems Opening ILKs
Even with the correct version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed, you can still experience difficulties opening ILKs. There can be other issues - unrelated to software - preventing you from opening ILK files. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid ILK file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the ILK file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a ILK program, such as Microsoft Visual Studio
- ILK file corruption
- Your ILK has adversely impacted by malware
- Hardware associated with ILK has outdated drivers
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Visual Studio Linker Input File format
