ISMV File Complications
Common ISMV Opening Problems
Smooth Streaming Disappeared
Double-clicking your ISMV file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open ISMV File". Generally, this is experienced in %%os%% because Smooth Streaming isn't installed on your PC. You won't be able to double-click to open your ISMV because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your ISMV, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").
Smooth Streaming Requires Update
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Smooth Streaming MPEG-4 Multimedia Fragment file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Installing the latest version of Smooth Streaming from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This issue mainly occurs when your Smooth Streaming MPEG-4 Multimedia Fragment file was created by a newer version of Smooth Streaming than you have on your PC.
Tip: If you right-click on your ISMV file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening ISMV files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.
Other ISMV File Issues
You can still experience errors opening ISMV files even with the latest version of Smooth Streaming installed on your PC. Other ISMV opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. These other problems include (listed in order from most to least common):
- ISMV file references in the Windows Registry are broken
- Accidental deletion of the description of the ISMV file in the Windows registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the ISMV format
- Your ISMV file is corrupted (issues with your Smooth Streaming MPEG-4 Multimedia Fragment file itself)
- The ISMV is infected with a virus
- Drivers associated with ISMV software need to be updated
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Smooth Streaming MPEG-4 Multimedia Fragment format
