Sources of ISP Problems
Issues Opening ISP Files
Microsoft IIS Removed
You attempt to load your ISP file and get an error such as "%%os%% Can't Open The ISP File Extension". Customarily, this means that Microsoft IIS is not installed on %%os%%. Because your operating system doesn't know what to do with this file, you won't be able to open it by double-clicking.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft IIS installed, and you know of another program to open your ISP file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Obsolete Version of Microsoft IIS
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a IIS Internet Service Provider Settings file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Visit the Microsoft Corporation website to download (or purchase) the latest version of Microsoft IIS. Your IIS Internet Service Provider Settings file was probably created by a newer release of Microsoft IIS than what's currently installed your computer.
Tip: If you right-click on your ISP file, then select "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), you can obtain hints about what version you need.
Regardless, most of the ISP file opening problems relate to not having the right version of Microsoft IIS installed.
Other Causes of ISP File Opening Problems
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft IIS will resolve your issue. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening ISPs. Additional factors include:
- Invalid ISP file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Corruption of the ISP file description inside the Registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the ISP format
- ISP file corruption
- The ISP is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to ISPs has device driver corruption
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the IIS Internet Service Provider Settings format
