Troubleshoot JSE Files
Issues Opening JSE Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Not Present
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open JSE Files" when trying to open your JSE. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Visual Studio for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the JSE file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you know of another program that can open your JSE file, you can try opening it by selecting the application from the programs listed.
Microsoft Visual Studio is Out-of-Date
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed that's incompatible with your JScript Encoded File type. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your JScript Encoded File file was created by a newer Microsoft Visual Studio than what you have installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of JSE file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening JSE files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
Associated Difficulties Loading JSE Files
Assuming you have the right Microsoft Visual Studio version installed, other problems can prevent you from opening JSE files. There can be external issues inside of %%os%% that are causing these errors when opening JSEs. Issues that aren't software-related:
- Invalid JSE file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the JSE file description from the Registry by mistake
- Invalid installation of a JSE-associated program (eg. Microsoft Visual Studio)
- Your JSE file is corrupted (issues with your JScript Encoded File file itself)
- The JSE is infected with a virus
- Hardware related to JSEs has device driver corruption
- Windows cannot load your JScript Encoded File file due to insufficient resources (eg. RAM)
