KCI Troubleshooting
Troubles Opening KCI Files
Microsoft Visual Studio Not Present
When trying to open your KCI file, you get the error "Can't Open KCI File Type". When this happens, it is commonly due to Microsoft Visual Studio missing in %%os%%. You won't be able to double-click to open your KCI because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.
Tip: Another KCI-related program can be selected to open the file by clicking "Show Apps" and finding the application.
Incorrect Microsoft Visual Studio Version
Occasionally, you might have an outdated version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed that's incompatible with your Visual Studio .NET DB Project Indexing Settings type. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Visual Studio if you don't have the right version. This problem is most common when you have an older version of the software application, and your file was created by a newer version that it cannot recognize.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the KCI file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening KCI files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed.
More Causes of Problems Opening KCIs
You can still experience errors opening KCI files even with the latest version of Microsoft Visual Studio installed on your PC. Other KCI opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:
- Invalid KCI file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Deletion of the KCI file description from the Registry by mistake
- Defective install of a KCI program, such as Microsoft Visual Studio
- Your KCI can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
- KCI file integrity has been compromised by malware
- Device drivers of the hardware associated with your KCI file are corrupt or out-of-date
- Your PC doesn’t have enough available resources to open the Visual Studio .NET DB Project Indexing Settings file
