Troubleshoot LCN Files
Typical LCN Opening Challenges
Microsoft Windows is Not Installed
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open LCN Files" when trying to open your LCN. If this is the case, it's usually due to the fact that you do not have Microsoft Windows for %%os%% installed on your computer. This will prevent you from double-clicking to open the LCN file because the OS doesn’t know how to handle it.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Windows installed, and you know of another program to open your LCN file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Outdated Microsoft Windows
It is possible that your version of Microsoft Windows isn't able to open your License File file due to incompatibility. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft Windows if you don't have the right version. The primary cause of this problem is that your License File file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Windows than what's installed.
Tip: You can sometimes get hints about the right program version by right-clicking on the LCN file, selecting "Properties", and looking at the version information.
Summary: Not having the right Microsoft Windows version on your computer can cause problems opening LCN files.
Associated Difficulties Loading LCN Files
In the majority of cases, installing the right version of Microsoft Windows will resolve your issue. If you are still having problems opening LCN files, there may be other issues that are preventing you from opening these files. Problems unrelated to software:
- Invalid LCN file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Accidental deletion of the description of the LCN file in the Windows registry
- Incomplete or bad installation of a software application associated with the LCN format
- Your LCN file is corrupted (issues with your License File file itself)
- The LCN is infected with a virus
- Hardware associated with LCN has outdated drivers
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the License File format
