Troubleshoot LDB Files

Typical LDB Opening Challenges

Microsoft Access Disappeared

If you attempt to load your LDB file, you experience a message such as "Can't Open LDB Files". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft Access for %%os%% installed. The OS won't know what to do with your LDB file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your LDB, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Microsoft Access is Out-of-Date

Sometimes your installed version of Microsoft Access won't support your Microsoft Access Lock File file. Installing the latest version of Microsoft Access from Microsoft Corporation is recommended. This problem is predominately due to having a Microsoft Access Lock File file version that was created by a newer version of Microsoft Access than what you have installed on your PC.

Tip: Right-clicking on your LDB, then clicking "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac), can provide clues about your file version.

Summary: In either case, the majority of problems opening LDB files are related to not having the correct software application installed on your computer.

Associated Difficulties Loading LDB Files

You can still experience errors opening LDB files even with the latest version of Microsoft Access installed on your PC. Other LDB opening errors can be created by other system problems inside of %%os%%. Additional factors include:

  • LDB file type Registry entries are wrong
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the LDB file inside the Windows Registry
  • Defective install of a LDB program, such as Microsoft Access
  • Your LDB file is corrupted (issues with your Microsoft Access Lock File file itself)
  • Your LDB is infected with malware
  • Device drivers of the hardware associated with your LDB file are corrupt or out-of-date
  • Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Microsoft Access Lock File format
