LDF File Complications

Typical LDF Opening Challenges

Missing Microsoft SQL Server

Double-clicking your LDF file prompts the message "%%os%% Can't Open LDF File". Usually, this is because you do not have Microsoft SQL Server for %%os%% installed. You won't be able to double-click to open your LDF because your OS doesn't know what to do with it.

Tip: When you have another program installed that you know will open your LDF, you can select it from the other programs listed (see "Show Apps").

Outdated Microsoft SQL Server

In other instances, your SQL Server Transaction Log File file version may not be supported by your version of Microsoft SQL Server. You will need to download a newer version of Microsoft SQL Server if you don't have the right version. Most of the time your SQL Server Transaction Log File file was created by a newer Microsoft SQL Server than what you have installed.

Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of LDF file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).

Ultimately, most of the difficulties opening LDF files are due to having the wrong version of Microsoft SQL Server installed.

Other LDF File Issues

Errors opening SQL Server Transaction Log File files can still occur even with the latest Microsoft SQL Server software installed on your computer. If you are continuing to have errors with loading LDF files, other external issues might be to blame. These issues include:

  • Invalid LDF file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
  • Unintentional removal of the description of the LDF file inside the Windows Registry
  • Partial installation of Microsoft SQL Server that did not fully complete
  • Your LDF can't be loaded properly (file corruption)
  • Malware-tainted LDF file can't be opened
  • Hardware associated with LDF has outdated drivers
  • Windows has inadequate resources to open your SQL Server Transaction Log File file

Poll: Do you use a computer or mobile device more often to view files?
