LKO Troubleshooting
Common Problems Opening LKO Files
Microsoft Outlook Express Disappeared
You encounter an error message such as "%%os%% Can't Open LKO Files" when trying to open your LKO. Customarily, this means that Microsoft Outlook Express is not installed on %%os%%. The OS won't know what to do with your LKO file, so double-clicking to load the file doesn't work.
Tip: If you don't have Microsoft Outlook Express installed, and you know of another program to open your LKO file, you can try opening it by selecting from the programs listed under "Show Apps".
Incorrect Microsoft Outlook Express Version
In some cases, you might have a newer (or older) version of a Outlook Express Linked Object file that is unsupported by your installed application version. Download the latest Microsoft Outlook Express version from the Microsoft Corporation website to ensure you have the correct one installed. The primary cause of this problem is that your Outlook Express Linked Object file was created by a different (newer) version of Microsoft Outlook Express than what's installed.
Tip: Sometimes you can get a clue about the version of LKO file you have by right clicking on the file, then clicking on "Properties" (Windows) or "Get Info" (Mac OSX).
Primarily, problems experienced when opening LKO files are due to having the incorrect version of Microsoft Outlook Express installed on your computer.
Other Causes of LKO File Opening Problems
You can still experience errors opening LKO files even with the latest version of Microsoft Outlook Express installed on your PC. If you're still experiencing problems opening LKO files, there could be other computer problems. Additional factors include:
- Invalid LKO file references in the Windows Registry (the "phonebook" of the Windows Operating System)
- Unintentional removal of the description of the LKO file inside the Windows Registry
- Defective install of a LKO program, such as Microsoft Outlook Express
- LKO file corruption
- Your LKO is infected with malware
- Drivers associated with LKO software need to be updated
- Your computer does not have the adequate system resources to open the Outlook Express Linked Object format
